Sažetak
Illustrated humour and satirical newspapers appeared in Civil Croatia as late as the 1860s, which is comparatively late in relation to the countries of Western and Central Europe. Croatian humour and satirical newspapers were primarily modelled on Austrian and German humour magazines, which had already circulated in Croatia at the time. The power of humour and satire, and in this context of the cartoon as a means for conveying political and ideological messages was recognised and, among Croatian political parties, accepted only by the Party of Right as the most radical critic of the Croatian-Hungarian Settlement and the consequences of the system it established in Civil Croatia. Until the late 19th century, humour and satirical newspapers as a suitable form for expressing critical views on current political and social phenomena and developments remained a specific journalistic feature of the Party of Right. Therefore, the cartoon’s stronger influence on public opinion in Civil Croatia is linked to them. The cartoons published in the Party-of-Right newspaper for jokes and satire “Bič” [Whip] stand out by their interesting content and quality, which was at the level of Central European production of the time. The publication of “Bič” began on the eve of Khuen-Héderváry's appointment as Croatian Ban. In 39 semi-monthly issues of “Bič”, more than 50 cartoons were published, a significant number of which levelled criticism at the Croatian-Hungarian Settlement and its repercussions as well as major protagonists of the system it established.
