Sažetak
The national identity or state identity represents the individuality and recognizability of the state or a nation in the international context, i.e. which distinguishes them distinctly from other states or nations and becoming long-term globaly recognisable. Culture is indivisible from identity and can be defined as an outward expression of identity. It is possible to use the musical idiom of the nation, because of its characteristics of nonverbal art, in emphasising specificity, especially underlining authenticity as the important part in creation of a cultural identity of the nation. In history, the theatre has often been used as a platform for awakening the national feeling, which will be shown on the example of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, when the repertoire was based on a strongly emphasised national vertical which contributed to the idea of the role the theatre played in the development and preservation of national culture and identity. The correlation and interaction between music and theatre is especially evident in the form of a musical theatre where musical and theatrical art, in a synergic way, form a special theatrical act. The music theatre was often used in identification processes on several national levels. This paper will show how the interaction of music and theatre, especially in the form of a musical theatre, can participate in the processes of shaping the identity of the nation and substantiate it with the example of the creation of national opera in Croatia.
