Sažetak
The adsorption properties of cotton modified by mercerization and cationization were researched in this paper. For that purpose, cotton yarn in loose state was scoured, mercerized in 18% and 24% NaOH, and cationized during mercerization with three cationic agents: short-chain 3-chloro-2- hydroxypropyl-trimethyl ammonium chloride (CHPTAC), and CHT-Bezema reactive compounds with polyammonium bonds Rewin OS and Rewin DWR. The primary properties were determined via change in length and strength. The characterization of chemical composition was performed using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy Attenuated Total Reflection (FTIR-ATR) and Electrokinetic Analysis (EKA). The adsorption properties were determined by the adsorption of Ba(OH)2, 0.01 M ionic surfactants (anionic sodium dodecyl sulphate and cationic N-cetyl piridinum chloride) and dyestuff 1% owf C.I. Direct Red 3. FTIR-ATR characterization confirms that the greatest changes occur during mercerization, but also indicated an increased number of -OH groups in cationized cotton. The electrokinetic potential results confirmed that all cationized surfaces are positively charged what contributed to better adsorption of anionic agents - surfactants and dyes. It is to point out that adsorption of 1% direct dyestuff is complete (100%) and without electrolyte.
