Sažetak
Epidemics have always left a large number of deaths behind and caused serious social and economic upheavals. One of the first was the Athenian plague which killed 75 to 100 thousand Athenians during the Peloponnesian War between 430 and 426 BC. It is presumed that she came to the city via the port of Piraeus through ships from the East. The Roman Empire was hit by the Antonine Plague (Galen Plague) between 165 and 180. It was brought by military units after returning from campaigns in the East. About five million people of the Empire died, of which as many as a quarter were inhabitants of the City of Rome. The Eastern Roman Empire was particularly hard hit by the Justinian plague. It was most intense between 541 and 543 and appeared occasionally until the middle of the 8th century. It has killed about 25% of the world's population. The most severe consequences were left by the Black Death, which originated in Central Asia and came to Europe via the Silk Road and Genoese merchant ships. It peaked between 1347 and 1351 and particularly affected the most commercially connected parts of the continent. About 25 million Europeans have lost their lives.
