Sažetak
Although we cannot digitize the stage, we can make available in digital environments all kinds of documents and all sorts of information that can help us speculate about the nature and function of early modern theaters, their plays, actors, dramatists, and audiences. We can use digital tools to make our imaginative storytelling more responsive to the diversity of the surviving evidence in the archives and to help ourselves feel a little better about ourselves when we make historical claims about the early modern stage and, particularly, about Shakespeare’s creative life on it. Such documents, of course, did not have to wait for digital technology to be reproduced. Indeed, a great number of them have repeatedly been reproduced in manuscript and in print, and many different stories about the early modern stage have already been told. Digital technology can make access easier ; it can create large sets of data ; it can help the scholar process data faster. But digital technology can never write the history of the early modern stage for us, and the role of the scholar, the expert, the student of early modern drama has never been more important. Overwhelmed with digital material, we need reliable guides and intelligent interpreters. We also need reminders that digitized archives are always likely to be imperfect representations of actual archives.
