Sažetak
In 1572, John Day, a prominent Tudor stationer and a committed Protestant propagandist, published an impressive folio volume of over 1200 pages entitled Pandectae locorum communium. John Foxe, the book’s author, was by that point already something of a literary celebrity, mostly due to the success of his Acts and Monuments, published by Day in 1563 and 1570. Perhaps for this reason Day was willing to publish an empty book under Foxe’s name. Pandectae locorum communium is a volume of empty leaves meant to be transformed into a compendium of handwritten commonplaces by each reader-owner. This presentation considers several surviving copies of Foxe’s book, arrested at various stages of fulfillment, in order to see what they can tell us about generational relationships and the history of reading, especially when we consider these topics from the perspective of the Renaissance culture of advice.
