Sažetak
The evidence we have about actual performances of plays in early modern England is often as baffling as it is illuminating. What exactly went on at the Inner Temple during the first production of Gorboduc in the early 1560s remains a matter of speculation, and while fascinating, Simon Forman’s accounts of the plays he saw at the Globe in 1611 leave a lot to be desired. Sometimes, Renaissance dramatic texts contain suggestive but incomplete descriptions of stage events, actors, or properties. At other times, they are printed as examples of purely literary drama even when there is considerable external evidence about their spectacular lives on the stage. This presentation considers the element of performance as essential to the aesthetic appeal of Renaissance tragedy, including its most literary manifestations. I discuss English plays within the larger European context, in terms of both dramatic theory and theatrical practice.
