Sažetak
Food production is of vital interest for every society. Therefore its spatial organization and distribution is of interest to both government and scientists. Zagreb County is located in Central Croatia. Its surface of 3 058 sq km “surrounds” the city of Zagreb from East, South and West. Due to its location, it is often referred to as “Zagreb green belt”. While Zagreb is the biggest city in Croatia with numerous urban functions, Zagreb County is a predominantly rural area. In Croatia, almost 250 000 people work in agriculture which represents 5, 5 per cent of total inhabitants. In Zagreb County that number is almost 21 000 people, or 6, 6 per cent, which is above state average. Zagreb County is among leading counties in the production of apples, grapes, vegetables and wine. In Croatia, 2 800 firms are registered in food production and processing, 6, 5 per cent of them are located in Zagreb County. Small-sized firms are companies which employ less than 250 employees. Their development started with the process of transition and privatization in the 1990s. Today, in both Zagreb County and Croatia, small-sized firms are the most dynamic segment of the economy since it generates employment and contributes to development of production and export. 64 per cent of employees in Croatia are employed in small- sized firms. The topic of our paper is small-sized firms and their position in food production in rural areas of Zagreb County. Analysis of size, location and structure of small-sized firms will be conducted, followed by the analysis of their spatial impact and the impact on the development of economy of Zagreb County. In addition, research of influence of governmental institutions such as Croatian Chamber of Commerce, Zagreb County Chamber of Commerce and Zagreb County will be done. As a conclusion, a model of development of small-sized firms and their role in the optimal agricultural and rural development of Zagreb County will be presented.
