Sažetak
The Templar Order was, as well as the rest of the military religious orders, founded with the primary purpose of protecting Christian holy sites and pilgrim routes, above all those in the Holy Land. The fixation of the Templar Order on the Holy Land was so great that its outposts in Christian Europe mostly served as sources of income to fund its defense. Considering this, it is not surprising that the Templar master in the Kingdom of Hungary and Croatia, Ponce de Cruce, had a key role in the organization of King Andrew II’s crusade. He conducted diplomatic missions in the king’s name, negotiating transport of his troops to the Holy Land, and he was also in charge of gathering taxes to fund the expedition. Besides taking part in the organization, Ponce served as Andrew’s regent in Croatia and Dalmatia during the crusade, and considering the great gifts received by the Templar Order from Andrew after his return, it is possible to conclude that the crusade was at least partly financed by the Templars’ own funds. The purpose of this lecture is to present the ways in which the Templar Order supported Andrew’s crusade, as well as its efforts to preserve his kingdom during his absence. Regarding this, the lecture will also touch upon the incomes of the Templar Order, its military power and its influence in Croatian lands, as well as the relations between the Templars and the Croatian and Dalmatian nobles and cities during Ponce de Cruce’s regency.
