Sažetak
Climate change is an inescapable issue today. Although the effects are being felt in all areas of the environment, including people's work and daily lives, the biggest problem is evident in agriculture. Due to increased rainfall, fast and heavy torrents and resulting floods, all good microorganisms, substances and elements are washed away and eroded from agricultural lands. In addition, floods cause desorption of elements that were previously adsorbed at some stage. In contrast, droughts are more serious in other regions. Both problems lead to food shortages. To solve the problem, mineral fertilizers are used as supplementary fertilizers, which may contain over 50% sulfur in some form, nitrates, phosphates, etc. The additional supply of fertilizers for agriculture increases the probability of water pollution, as any substance in the environment sooner or later gets into the water. In Međimurje agricultural land together with forests cover 75% of the area. The chemical composition of the studied surface waters, the Mura and the Drava, which surround the area, is similar to European surface waters, except for the sulfur content. Elevated sulfur concentrations may be directly related to the addition of plant fertilizers and soil leaching. Possible consequences of climate change on the chemical composition of the Mura and Drava rivers will be discussed.
