Sažetak
The preparations for the wedding of Vladislaus II Jagiellon, King of Bohemia, Hungary and Croatia and Anne of Foix-Candale, a distant relative of the king of France, which took place in 1502, attracted the attention of a number of contemporary artists. Although the young queen was generally unloved by Croatian historians, some of whom descibed her as a witch and a poisoner, it is undisputable that Croats and Dalmatians contributed greatly to the grandeur of her wedding. Dalmatian humanists provided a link between the Renaissance culture of Italy and the mostly still Medieval Hungary and Croatia. Therefore, it was the Ragusan Felix Petančić who played the crucial role in the diplomatic preparations for the wedding and, according to some claims, painted a portrait of the future queen, and Matthew Andreis of Trogir composed an all'antica Epithalamium in honor of the occasion. The wedding also brought several Croatian places to the mind of the French public, as the Breton herald in Anne's entourage, Pierre Choque, mentioned the queen visiting the seats of the foremost Croatian nobles in his „travelogue“, and other French authors did the same. This paper will concentrate on the effects the wedding of Vladislaus and Anne had on the cultural production of Croatian and Dalmatian creators, but also on the role it played in increasing the prestige of Croatia and Dalmatia in contemporary Europe through the cultural production of others. It shall attempt to present the interconnections between various cultural milieus – the French and Hungarian royal courts, Dalmatian humanist circles, Croatian aristocracy – and the active participation of Dalmatians and Croatians in the greater network of the Renaissance.
