Sažetak
In modern society bilingualism is a common phenomenon considered positive and preferable, especially nowadays in an era which tends to global connection. However, it has not been always like that. Until recently bilingualism has not been regarded as an advantage and early studies indicated negative cognitive consequences of bilingual development e.g. mental confusion, disadvantageous effects on intelligence, lower IQ etc. Conversely, recent studies suggest a positive effect of bilingualism on children's cognitive development. Although, today it is known that the negative results of the early studies can be assigned to methodological inadequacy in research designs and that numerous recent studies confirm the advantages for bilingual children, there is still lack of a satisfactory and clear description of the interaction between intelligence and bilingualism. The attempt to develop a suitable theoretical model that will give full account for their interaction is difficult because both phenomena are extremely complex with a great number of factors influencing them. One interesting question is whether the potential effect of bilingualism will influence some basic cognitive function that would be seen in a range of more cognitive activities or only in one domain - the verbal. In this paper we will describe the relation between bilingualism and intelligence based on the results obtained in a research with Croatian monolingual and bilingual children. The children were tested with a language, mathematical and nonverbal intelligence test.
