Sažetak
Corrosion causes a large loss of material from the rail and rail fastening system, which is associated with a reduction in fastening load and can affect traffic safety. The rate of corrosion depends on the type of track and the environmental conditions around the rail. In closed rail formations built as a part of roadway surface, the corrosion process can be very rapid if the rails are not fully insulated, and if the track drainage system is not adequately maintained. In a very corrosive environment, the life of rail can be shortened to only a few years. Stray current corrosion is also very common on urban tracks due to very high frequency of traffic. Stray current is a major hazard for urban tracks and metal infrastructures near the tracks. In this work, the comparison of two rail samples, one exposed to electrochemical corrosion and the other exposed to stray current corrosion, has been carried out. The result analysis has showed the difference in the degradation of these two samples after the corrosion processes. The effect on the metal surface due to stray currents are also shown.
