Sažetak
Due to the increased motorization and the growing number of vehicles in city centres, there are many negative phenomena such as traffic congestion, emissions, reduction of the safety level and others. Parking is a powerful tool for traffic demand management. Proper management of the parking system can reduce the share of passenger cars in the traffic system. With this approach, it is possible to provide space for the development of sustainable forms of transport such as walking, cycling and public transport to increase the quality of life in cities. The fact is that one personal vehicle spends 95% of its time parked, so parking is a big problem in terms of rational use of urban space. Therefore, it is necessary to provide enough parking spaces, and at the same time will not increase traffic congestion. The key thing in creating a functional parking system is to manage existing parking capacities and plan new ones to achieve a balance between parking supply and parking demand. The main condition for this is a quality assessment of future parking demand that requires detailed analyses of influencing factors to increase the accuracy of the assessment. Estimating future parking demand is a process of forecast the required number of parking spaces based on certain input variables. Previous research in the field of estimating future parking demand uses an incomplete number of variables as input data which can lead to inaccurate results. This paper analyses the current forecasting methods and the variables used in the research. This paper also established the different approach to the process of forecasting future parking demand. The causes of inaccurate forecasts and trends in the development of new models and methods are analysed. The paper also defines the basic indicators of parking demand and describes the role of several factors such as traffic factors, spatial factors, economic factors, and user habits. This paper concludes that the calculation of future demand strongly depends on the location of the parking system, so the major problem in the field of parking demand research is the eterogeneity of the research area. An additional problem with the input variables in most existing models is the lack of information on the estimated coefficient of vehicle change per parking space and vehicle retention time in the parking lot. If the abovementioned information were included in the analysis, the quality of the estimate of future parking demand would increase.
