Sažetak
Seasonal and vertical distribution of Chaetoceros species were investigated in the Gruž and Mali Ston Bays with biweekly or monthly sampling during two one-year cycles (1984-1985 and 1988-1989). Twenty-eight species of Chaetoceros were identified. Chaetoceros compressus Lauder, Ch. danicus Cleve, Ch. decipiens Cleve and Ch. diversus Cleve constituted more than 80% of the microphytoplankton cells present during spring diatom blooms. Seasonal alternations between mixing and stratification of the water column in Mali Ston Bay affected Chaetoceros dynamics on a seasonal scale. Vertical distribution of dominant Chaetoceros spp. depended on the pycnocline position in the water column. Highest cell numbers of the dominant Chaetoceros in the water column was recorded above the pycnocline depth in the Mali Ston Bay, and in Gruž Bay at the pycnocline depth.
