Sažetak
Background: The consequences of traumatic brain injury (TBI) affect various aspects of occupational participation, elicit changes in self-identity and make adaptation to numerous new challenges necessary. Objective: To explore the process of occupational adaptation in the experiences of persons with TBI. Methods: As part of a systematic literature review examining the role of occupational participation following TBI, thematic analysis of 14 studies gave rise to three main themes, one of which was occupational adaptation. Using Kielhofner’s theoretical framework of occupational adaptation, this theme will be further elaborated from the perspectives of persons who have experienced TBI. Results: Occupational adaptation can be significantly compromised following TBI, while participation in meaningful occupations can improve competencies and serve as an important factor in the process of rebuilding one’s identity. For persons with TBI, the use of different strategies contributed to a sense of control over daily occupations, while the social environment enhanced the process of adaptation. Conclusions: Occupational adaptation following TBI is an important, yet difficult process that deserves greater recognition and support during the occupational therapy process. Further research using valid outcome measures is also needed to better understand the adaptation process following TBI.
