Background: In this study relationship between skin reactivity to common inhalatory allergens and bronchial responsiveness induced by histamine and exercise were studied. Methods: In this study 51 subjects aged 15-51 years were included: 16 healthy controls and 35 patients with allergic rhinitis and/or allergic asthma. A skin prick test to common inhalatory allergens (Alk-Abello, Denmark) was performed and mean wheal diameter 3 mm or larger than the negative control was considered positive. The subjects were given a histamine challenge test according to Chai and PD20FEV1&#8805 ; 7, 8 &#956 ; mol was considered as bronchial hyperresponsiveness. All subjects went through a submaximal constant exercise test (CET) and fall index FEV1 &#8805 ; 10% was considered positive bronchial reaction. Results: Significant correllation was found between skin reactivity to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus expressed as mean wheal diameter (mm) and bronchial responsiveness to histamine expressed as PD20FEV1 (&#956 ; mol) (r=-0, 31, p=0, 016). Such correlation was not found for tree, grass and weed pollen. In addition, mean skin reactivity to all tested common inhalatory allergens did not correlate significantly with bronchial responsiveness to exercise expressed as fall index FEV1 (%), Area Under the time-response Curve (AUC0-30) (min x %) and fall index FEF25-75 (%). Conclusion: Our results support previous studies which found significant correlation between size of skin reaction to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and degree of bronhcial responsiveness to inhaled histamine. No significant relationship between size of skin reaction to dust mites, pollen allergens and bronhcial responsiveness to exercise was found. This results suggest different mechanisms in bronchial responsiveness to histamine and bronchial responsiveness to exercise.
