Franz Lehár (1870−1948) is today best known as an opera composer who breathed new life into this genre at the beginning of the 20th century. This is probably one of the reasons why his first performed opera, Kukuška, remained in the background of his operetta opus. This opera, which has become better known in its revised version, Tatjana (1906), was written during the composer’s service in the Imperial and Royal Navy in Pula (the Navy Orchestra) in 1896 to the libretto written by his friend, poet and sea captain, Felix Falzari (1859−1912) . It is precisely this Lehár’s début opera that symbolizes his youthful ambitions and the wish to break free from the constraints of military service. Lehár was 26 when he composed the opera. By tracing this composer’s path from opera composition and the early ambitions in the Pula period to opera performances in European centres, with all the disappointments and financial difficulties he faced, it becomes evident that this work marked a pivotal moment in Lehár’s early years as an artist.
