Sažetak
The review of the decorations of theatre interiors in Croatia has led to the conclusion that the Theatre Ivan pl. Zajc in Rijeka is the only theatre that has preserved its integral design as it was initially planned and realized at the time of the inauguration. Nine paintings inserted into cartouches have firmly resisted trials and tribulations ever sine 1885, to finally welcome restoration and proper representation at an exhibition prior to their final installation at the original location. These large paintings by Franz Matsch, and Ernst and Gustav Klimt are worthy representatives of a particular point in the time of the Viennese art scene in the 1880s, in the midst of high (mature) Historicism whose stylistic influences spilled over throughout the Monarchy. The conducted comparative research has confirmed the exceptional importance of the works by the famous painter Gustav Klimt in the corupus of Croatian theatre decorations as well as the entire 19th century painting, standing as masterpieces of historicist symbolism with a pronounced antique genre. It is important to note that the revaluation of these painting within Klimt´s oeuvre has confirmed and artistic turning pint that took place precisely on the example of the Rijeka paintings when Klimt matured both as a draughtsman and a painter.
