Sažetak
Examining soil quality using different model organisms is a widespread practice. Most commonly, various soil organisms are used in such tests, e.g. earthworms, springtails, enchytraeids, etc. However, besides soil organisms, aquatic organisms can also be very informative on the presence of various xenobiotics that can occur in the soil. Today, such aquatic model organisms are more commonly used as they are great indicators of adverse effects of numerous substances that occur in the soil and as such are prone to run-off and/or leaching to different environmental matrices (e.g. water). In addition, new pesticides have to be tested on their influence on non-target organisms, and aquatic organisms are also the ones affected. Aquatic organisms used in these tests can respond in various ways ; in algae we can monitor growth inhibition, Raphidocelis subcapitata and Chlorella sp. freshwater algae are widely used in these tests ; immobilisation and endocrine disruption is monitored in the freshwater cladocerans of genera Daphnia and Moina ; effects on biomarkers are commonly examined in zebrafish Danio rerio. In addition to these commonly used model organisms, more and more tests consider native species in certain areas as they present more realistic scenarios.
