Sažetak
The modern world is in constant movement, where the sudden and abrupt changes occur in the field of all types of human activity. Progress in the field of science, art, technology and electronics that took place in the 20th century and culminated at the end of the 20th and in the beginning of 21st century requires all community members to be able to welcome such a change, to adapt to them and to exploit the experience. Contemporary edu- cational system must face the goals and tasks that accompany these social trends and changes. Teachers, profes- sors and other educators, seek new roles and competencies to adapt. This paper elaborated the competence which principals and school managers must obtain in order to successfully perform their professional roles and to contribute to the goals and tasks of education to be implemented fully and in the most efficient manner. The paper also elaborated core competencies for a successful performance of functions of the principal: personal, development, professional, social and action competencies. In addition to that, I analyzed personality traits a principal needed to efficiently perform its duties and tasks that the community sets before school management. School principals, i.e., school managers, today play a key role in the organization and implementation of educational-correctional activities in schools. Only principals with high moral standards and competence, fully grown and emotionally stable will be able to perform their professional role in comtemporary school by contributing to the realisation of education purposes.
