Sažetak
The COVID-19 virus pandemic affected all spheres of human life, including the language in which new words, phrases and idioms appeared in response to the emerging situation. These new terms as a linguistic reflection of a pandemic are quickly becoming part of our daily vocabulary. Given that the media played a key role in informing the population about everyday events related to the pandemic, this presentation will analyze lexical innovations as a reflection of the corona virus in the most widely read Croatian online newspapers, ie Internet portals (Index.hr, Jutarnji list, 24sata.hr, Večernji list, Net.hr, Dnevnik.hr, tportal.hr, RTL.hr, Slobodna Dalmacija). The main source will be news articles. The analysis will focus on word formation processes, such as neologisms, their motivation, use and morphological and syntactic features, but also the influence of foreign expressions, especially English. In addition, the level of use of neologisms in relation to the use of foreign terms will be considered. The results will show the diversity of possible forms of word derivation, but also the readiness of the media discourse of the Croatian language to respond to language demands in times of pandemic.
