Sažetak
In the early modern period, the most numerous of Croatian immigrants in Istanbul were the Ragusans, i.e., the citizens of the Republic of Dubrovnik (Ragusa). As a friendly and faithful vassal state, the mercantile republic and its citizens enjoyed privileges that stimulated migration to the Ottoman Balkans in general, and Istanbul as the greatest economic center of the empire in particular. The majority of immigrants in the nineteenth century were Dalmatians, after the Austrian occupation, which annexed Dubrovnik to Dalmatia, this included the Ragusans as well. The role of the Croatian immigrants in Istanbul is analyzed in the context of the debated role of Western immigrants in the Ottoman Empire. In premodern times, the Ragusans figured as one of the main mediators in trade between the Ottoman Empire and Western Europe, second only to Venetians, in the time of peace, while at the time of the Ottoman- Venetian wars they took over the lead as trusted Ottoman vassals. In the long nineteenth century, the old role of middlemen and mediators was supplemented with the disputed roles of compradors and agents of modernization. The majority of the Croatian immigrants represented the physical work force and proletariat. Some individuals, on the other hand, were entrepreneurs themselves or held important positions in European-led or inspired projects that played an important role in the transfer of technology to the Ottoman Empire, and thus were valued newcomers. These positions included middle to high ranking positions in mining, steamship and railway companies, printing, the tobacco industry, and cartography.
