Sažetak
The snowdrop windflower, Anemone sylvestris is a narrowly distributed vascular plant in Croatia, in recent times known only from three reliable areas: eastern Prigorje, Ivanščica Mt. and a recently discovered population on Papuk Mt. It grows on two habitat types: semi-natural dry grasslands and forest fringes and in 2014 it was classified as vulnerable (VU). Although recognised as an important umbrella species, it had not been the subject of study until recently. Here we present an overview of the 2015–2021 research efforts in eastern Prigorje, both in- and outside of the Natura 2000 site Vejalnica & Krč, Nature Park Medvednica and Significant Landscape Goranec. In 2015 the plants were counted late in the flowering season, therefore values for that year are not included in the analyses. In 2016–2017 and 2019–2021 all survey plots were visited during their flowering maximums, with all flowering plants counted. The majority of A. sylvestris plants are present in 150 microlocations grouped in 26 plots on three discontinuous paired groups on the hills of Krč and Bedenik, Vejalnica and Sel, and Dužica and Sopnica. Even on them the plants are usually clumped together in more or less discontinuous patches of varying sizes and density. Abundance ranged from a total of 7918 flowering plants in 2017 to 19851 flowering plants in 2019. Over the years snowdrop windflowers disappeared from 21 microlocations due to habitat succession and in 2021 two microlocations were discovered to be completely devastated due to changes in land use and construction work. During the research period several threats to the survival of the species were detected, the most notable being: habitat loss/mismanagement, off-road driving, and fires. The latter is expected to become a more prominent risk due to climate change.
