Sažetak
In Croatia, the period after the First World War was marked by an increased interest in public health problems due to the population's poor health. There was a need to promote social and preventive medicine. The difficult economic and social situation further promoted the spread of contagious diseases. The mentioned also applied to Osijek, where, with the mediation of Andrija Štampar, health and auxiliary institutions were established. The most important were: the Community Health Center in Osijek (1926-1956), the Institute for Epidemiology (1925 - 1952), the Sanitation Institute (1950-1960), and the Institute for Health Care Osijek (1961-1982). These institutions were established to provide outpatient care to the population. To illustrate, they provided services that included emergency care at home, referring patients to hospital, taking sanitary measures, reporting infectious patients and sources of infection, providing health care to pregnant women, promoting vaccinations, performing laboratory examinations, lab tests on drinking water, and foodstuffs, testing of hygienic conditions of industrial corporations and other. Although the names and individual functions of the institutions have changed, their activities have permanently transformed the health picture of Osijek and surrounding places. This paper aims to present the development and work of the most critical public health institutions in Osijek and analyze their impact on improving the health conditions in the area. The paper will primarily focus on the period between the mid-1920s and mid-1950s, marked by the most notable development of public health institutions. Additionally, it will give a brief overview of the further development of said institutions until the late 1980s.
