Sažetak
The Piazza is a multidimensional space and concept whose entanglement with a wide variety of phenomena, both historical and sociological, philosophical and literary ones, depend largely on its manifestations. We would like to argue that the Piazza can be defined through the concept of “fête” (Ozouf), through its numerous synonyms in English and its dependence of a specific historical (revolutionary) context. Marquis de Sade’s “engagement” throughout the French Revolution (Lever, Nadeau), from his alleged profile as a “Marquis sans-culotte” or “justicier” (avenger?) to the concept of Revolution as theatre, shows that the piazza, a place where voices are heard and bodies are put on display, is a platform for the “people” (demos, ethnos, ochlos), “le petit peuple”, from his journey to Italy (cuccagna) to his public interventions during the Revolution. Piazza, as a place of ceremony, ritual, feast, celebration and execution, in a highly coded French society of the 18th century (Farge), is a space where bodies do demonstrate, show and prove, from the “corps- théâtre” (Nancy) to the “mise en scène”, a strange spectacle of a beheaded monarchy.
