Sažetak
The present research explores the frequency and the effects of using arts in French language classes in Croatian and Japanese schools. Interdisciplinary and active learning have been in focus of recent pedagogical recommendations for teaching foreign languages and art-based activities form a significant part of them. As they develop creativity and improve skills such as oral expression, as well as have other benefits for students’ development, we were interested in seeing how the application of these activities looks in practice in Croatian and Japanese schools. We also wanted to explore their types, present examples and outcomes of their use in French language class and find out the opinions of the teachers and students who use them. In order to reach that goal, we observed classes and conducted a survey among Croatian and Japanese teachers and professors with experience in the field. Although they share the same opinions on their positive effects and face similar challenges in implementing them, Croatian and Japanese teachers come from a different cultural, historical and educational background and, therefore, use this method at a very different frequency.
