Sažetak
Cohesion, i.e. text surface connections between sentences and parts of a text, is achieved by different grammatical and lexical cohesive devices (e.g. Halliday & Hasan 1976). In the context of second language (L2) learning, this implies that L2 learners should develop the ability to use cohesive devices. The present study looks into L2 learners’ use of repetition as a specific type of cohesive device. This study analyses 30 argumentative essays written by L2 learners of German and 30 texts written by L2 learners of English. Unlike previous studies, the present analysis explores the form of the repeated unit and addresses the differences between German and English L2 texts. The results show that repetitions of orthographic words are more frequent than repetitions of phrases and clause patterns. More variation is found in English than in German L2 texts.
