Sažetak
Coronavirus has influenced many walks of life from medicine to education and language. Languages change over time, but in 2020 with the appearance of Coronavirus, we have the chance to watch it mutate in real-time. The appearance of Coronavirus is connected with the appearance of many new words and phrases as well as the change of meaning of the existing ones. From the beginning of the pandemic linguists from the Institute of Croatian Language and Linguistics started collecting words and expressions connected with the Coronavirus used in the media. This resulted in an online Glossary of Coronavirus https://jezik.hr/koronavirus/ which records the most common words and expressions appearing in the media. These words can be divided into few groups according to different criteria (single words – expressions ; standard words – jargon words ; new words – words getting a new specialized meaning often through metaphorisation). Many of these words and phrases were connected with some spelling (e.g. what is the correct spelling Covid-19/ COVID-19/covid-19 etc.) or language problem (e.g. how to translate social distance or drive-in into Croatian), as many variants were simultaneously used in the media sometimes even in the same text. Faced with many questions from Croatian language users as well as journalists, the linguists from the Institute devoted a special issue of the journal Hrvatski jezik (https://hrcak.srce.hr/hrjezik) to Coronavirus and e-learning due to Coronavirus. Some of the neologisms connected with the Coronavirus are recorded in the Croatian Web Dictionary – Mrežnik a monolingual, corpus-based online dictionary compiled at the Institute of Croatian Language and Linguistics. In the presentation, the authors will focus on linguistic and lexicographic issues connected with the terminology of Coronavirus.
