Sažetak
Modern development and information accessibility de-isolated and reconnected once distant parts of the world, and joined them together in the creation of a new history. This helped create a new spatial dimension that reflects in the creation of a new cosmopolitan nationality and multicultural society. Intercultural competence, which denotes having a set of skills necessary to establish communication between people from different cultures, is a prerequisite to being part of a multicultural society. The notion of culture in the former Yugoslavia is still constrained by natural necessity, that is, by territorial identity and national and ideological divisions arising from the need to protect one’s creativity and culture. Due to globalization, local and global linked inextricably ; in addition, a notable change in the education system caused an increase in the number of students applying for international student exchange programs. Both students and teachers are required to develop new skills, gain new knowledge and attitudes so they can become active participants in a multicultural dialogue. In order to achieve that goal, it is important to promote intercultural sensitivity and competence at the university level. The aim of this paper is to explore how students and teachers at the University of Zadar, Split, Belgrade, Novi Sad, Sarajevo, and Tuzla perceive intercultural competence. Specifically, the research will explore students’ perceptions of their teachers’ intercultural sensitivity. Moreover, the study will examine how teachers perceive their own intercultural sensitivity, as well as how they appraise their abilities to instruct foreign students. By means of quantitative methods, this study will attempt to gain a better understanding of the subject matter and show the differences between said institutions of higher education.
