Sažetak
Niccolò Vito di Gozze (Nikola Vitov Gučetić, 1549-1610) mentioned music in a number of shorter passages in three among his works: Dialogo della bellezza (Dialogue on Beauty, 1581), Governo della famiglia (The Governing of the Family, 1589) and Dello stato delle republiche (On the State of the Republics, 1591). Gozze's writings in general were strongly influenced by his personal inclinations and his socio-political engagement, thus he introduced dimension of practicality in his theoretical thought. His ideas on music also manifest a peculiar unity of theory and practice – many of his ideas on music seem to have been inspired and thus originate from his experience of the living musical practice of his home town of Dubrovnik. This paper presents analysis of the fragments in which Gozze treated musical instruments, thereby showing a very good knowledge of them. In his earlier works, Dialogo della bellezza (1581) and Governo della famiglia (1589), Gozze shortly considered only two instruments, lyre and cithara, while later, in Dello stato delle republiche (1591), he mentioned a whole range of various instruments, thus showing his inclination towards instrumental music. Gozze divided instruments in two groups: in the first group he included old instruments from the Antiquity and the Middle Ages (string: barbiton, heptagon, organistrum, sambuca ; wind: svirale, tibia, diple), while in the second group he presented 'modern' instruments which were used in the Renaissance. Furthermore, Gozze divided 'modern' instruments according to the criteria of their appropriateness to noblemen. He considered wind instruments (trumpet, cornet, flute, trombone, sordine) to be unappropriate for noblemen, unlike string (viol and lute) and keyboard instruments (clavicembalo) which he considered to be suitable for the entertainment of aristocracy. Gozze also divided these instruments according to age appropriateness, considering harpsichord to be suitable for the elderly, while he thought viol and lute to be suitable for younger noblemen, thus being close to the ideas Castiglione presented in his work Il libro del cortegiano (1528).
