Sažetak
Sanitary engineering as a profession is connected with at least three challenges which provides an incentive for bioethical attention. 1) On the level of the mere name and definition of the profession there are many ambiguities, which needs a wider framework of contextualisation challenging for bioethical broad approach as a possible way of accomplishing resolutions. 2) Methodology of the profession, similarly to bioethics, seems as combination of several particular methodologies and approaches of different sciences and disciplines, but somehow connected with a unique guiding tread. 3) The profession sometimes, quite similar to bioethics, looks like an amalgam of different sciences and disciplines, and not a self-standing clearly defined discipline. I will argue that bioethical perspective on the profession of sanitary engineering helps to show that these three features should be taken as a challenge, and not as a problem for the profession. I am arguing that bioethics could, by its own experience of discipline development, shed some light how these three features are becoming an advantage of the sanitary engineering in the world of more and more complex subjects which could not be adequately investigated with some monoperspective approach. In the first part I present preliminary bioethical analysis of all three mentioned features as a useful way of clarifying and strengthening the identity of the profession using some generally accepted and confirmed signs of sanitary engineering as an independent profession. In the second part I argue that the last sign of professional identity – professional ethics – received the least space and attention, but is a crucial dimension of giving the profession even stronger sense of independence and professional identity, building a special and unique worldview, which is given by specific ethic which is traced at the crossroads of environmental ethics and public health ethics.
