Sažetak
English (BE) teachers at the Department of Foreign Business Languages at the Graduate School od Economics and Business (GSEB), University of Zagreb, wanted to ascertain the practical validity and flexibility of the syllabi they teach. In other words they wanted to find out whether there was a gap between what they wanted their students to know and what the labour market demands. They contacted 100 alumni who currently work in Croatia's private and public companies, in large banks and in government bodies. The respondents were sent an extensive questionnaire in which they were asked about the language requirements during their recruitment process, and the BE language needs they hvae in their present job. The result of the survey show that the majority of employers expect candidates to possess good business English, particularly oral business skills in English for, among other purposes, presentations, meetings, and ngotiations. Good knowledge of general English is no longere considered to suffice. The paper looks at several types of possible Business English course syllabi at the tertiary level, analyses which combiantions of them offer most relevance and flexibility, and points to the teaching methods and techniques which can realise the BE syllabi to the best advantage of both students and teachers, within the limitations currently encountered in the Department of Foreign Business Languages, above all, large groups. Finally, it presents and discusses the results of the research.
