Sažetak
The main question this paper tries to provide an answer to is why democratic transformation was successful in Tunisia. The research approach is primarily rooted in descriptive- empirical actor theories, although culturalist theories were used as well, as to better understand the political ideas and stances of Islamist actors. The research strategy is a focused case-study of Tunisia. The proposed hypothesis claims that Tunisia had a softer civilian authoritarian regime which permitted interaction and cooperation of opposition and regime elites, which resulted in a political agreement and, subsequently, a successful democratic transition. The paper focuses on interactions between Islamist actors and secular elites of the former regime. Although political division between Islamist and secular forces exists all across the Middle East and North Africa, only in Tunisia their interaction resulted in political agreement and subsequent democratization, while in other cases it resulted in conflict and restoration of the authoritarian political systems. This paper tackles the issue why Tunisia was an exception to this rule.
