Sažetak
This paper presents examples of practical application of the CAN (Controller Area Network) protocol on different system levels in industrial and marine environment. The first example shows the use of CAN for data exchange within an interphone system, implemented at the hydro power plant "Senj". For the particular application, the main advantages and disadvantages of CAN, with respect to protocols based on RS-485 standard are explained. The second example is a typical application of CAN for interfacing various electronic devices and systems on a warship. Based on these examples, a general comparison of industrial and marine CAN applications is made, regarding the preferred method of communication and the system requirements for baud rate, bus length, number of units and types of messages.
