Sažetak
The 19th century was the period of the awakening of feelings of national identity and the period in which the nation-states began to form. In Croatian history, this period is known as the Illyrian movement, intertwined with the wider context of Croatian national revival which, unlike the more strictly political Illyrian movement, referred also to cultural activity. The national revival lasted from the beginning of the 19th century until 1874. During this time, many Croatian artists authored works that would become famous even during their lives. Among the most important artistic achievements were the patriotic songs called budnice – songs intended to awaken the feeling of national devotion. The most memorable examples are Ljudevit Gaj's Još Hrvatska ni propala and Antun Mihanović's Horvatska domovina, the latter of which was so influential that it was made to be the Croatian national anthem (a position it still occupies). Besides budnice, another genre came into being – the so called davorije, allegedly named after the Slavic god of war, Davor. These songs were as patriotic as budnice, with an additional purpose of incensing the people's fighting spirit. Dimitrija Demeter's Pjesma Hrvata (more well-known after its first line, Prosto zrakom ptica leti) is exemplar. The presentation will explain the historical circumstances of the period and how they were reflected in the development of the said music genres.
