Sažetak
In VII Century BC, the Greek poet Archilochus wrote, &#8220 ; The fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing&#8221 ; . Economics has its hedgehogs and its foxes. Knowing many things or knowing one big thing can be applied to the theory and practice of planning and development. Well known Croatian economist, Jakov Sirtković (further referred as JS) is a fox and a hedgehog at the same time. JS has known many things in the field and he has known one big thing i.e. Economics. I have studied, and worked with JS closely for over 39 years now. I have studied him as a theorist and watched him act as a planner and a highest placed executive of development policy in the country. In the following presentation of his contributions to economic thought, I would like to restrict myself only to the mentioned narrow field of planning and development economics. The best way to assess and reflect on JS thoughts on planning and development economics is to review some of his published works on the subject, such as: his doctoral thesis &#8216 ; Planiranje proširene reprodukcije u socijalizmu&#8217 ; (1951) ; &#8216 ; Metode ekonomske analize i ekonomske politike&#8217 ; (1956) ; &#8216 ; Problemi privrednog plairanja u Jugoslaviji&#8217 ; (1961) ; and &#8216 ; Teorija i politika ekonomskog razvoja (1972). Following is my interpretation of his ideas, as I read what he wrote rather than his quotes.
