Sažetak
Within the course of Static Analysis 2, students of the third year of Undergraduate study of Civil Engineering had the opportunity to explore a design process of lightweight tensile structures. By following the footsteps of the form-finding master Frei Otto, students first investigated a physical form-finding by creating freeform tensile models. Later, the assignment was to try to obtain a similar shape of the structure by using the latest computational design methods. In this paper, one of the models created by students is presented in detail. The model is envisaged as a pavilion intended for public use. During exploration of the form, special attention is paid to the realization of boundary conditions and satisfying curvature. Certain key steps in building of such a model are identified and showed in a form of a workflow diagram. The physical modelling of the structure served to better understand the specific behaviour of tensile structures prior to the numerical form- finding. The geometry of the numerical model is created and manipulated inside the 3D CAD modelling software Rhinoceros [1] by using several Grasshopper plug- ins. Numerical form- finding and assignment of additional constraints were performed using Falcon [2], plug-in based on the iterative application of the force density method [3, 4]. A visual comparison of the obtained shape is made based on the model’s photograph overlapped with the visualisation of obtained numerical results.
