Sažetak
Graft copolymers can be prepared by graft polymerization in solution or by reactive extrusion in bulk. In-situ polymerization is type of polymerization where one type of polymer is chemically bounded with another type of monomer or polymer. Need for such mixing of two polymers is consequence of immiscibility of the most known polymers today. Mixing two or more polymers in polymer blend is challenging task for scientists because this is the most efficient method for preparation of new polymer material.(1, 2) Graft copolymers can greatly contribute to achieve this task because they act as compatibilizer in polymer blends which are prepared of immiscible polymers. In this study graft copolymer ethylene-propylene-diene and polystyrene (EPDM-g-PS) was synthesized by in-situ polymerization where monomer styrene (St) was grafted on EPDM polymer. Optimal conditions of in-situ polymerization ; like optimum concentration of initiator, optimal temperature of polymerization and rate of grafting reaction as well the activation energy (Ea) of grafting reaction were determined. Synthesized graft copolymer EPDM-g-PS was further used as compatibilizer in preparation of polymer blends. Polymer blends were prepared of styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN), ethylene-propylene-diene (EPDM) and graft copolymers EPDM-g-PS. Ratio of mixed polymers SAN/EPDM/EPDM-g-PS was as follow ; 95/5/5, 90/10/5, 85/15/5 and 80/20/5 respectively. Effect of graft copolymers on miscibility of SAN and EPDM polymers was evaluated by determination of mechanical properties, tensile strength.
