Sažetak
Is music simply an autonomous means of expression with an aesthetical value or can it be an active agent in a dialogue with different surrounding (con)texts, as well? Rich cross-disciplinary debates and approaches on significance, role and meaning of music outside its pure artistic context confirm and contribute the notion of addressing music as an activity taking part of an interplay with its various (con)texts. Historical documents witness that James Joyce enjoyed and was well acquainted with many musical genres (from piano compositions and operas to Italian and Irish folk songs). Although Joyce uses words as a dominant medium of expression, the paper explores, recognizes and describes functions and roles music and musical allusions play in James Joyce’s short story The Dead. Through musical allusions as a subtle yet complicated interplay in Joyce’s story, we read on two sub-stories: the story of social macrostructure life in Ireland at the turn of the last century that intervenes with the stories of characters’ inner worlds. Even more, music in The Dead appears as a form of a discussion platform for: race, religion, nationalism, language, better life conditions, melancholic atmosphere and moods, good- fellowship and other. In a word, music serves as a framework for better understanding of all the characters in the story, thereby making them less abstract.
