Sažetak
Recycling of post-use plastic waste is very convenient way of waste management from economical and ecological viewpoint. In the early nineties the emphasis was on mechanical recycling. Today, an integral approach to plastic recycling, which includes feedstock recycling, incineration with energy recovery and chemical recycling is favoured. 1 During the applicatiom polymer material is submited to various ageing effects like UV, thermal and mechanical. Ageing effects cause degradation of polymers that is followed by formation of polymer radicals. Polymer radicals represent active end of polymers which easily reacts with new monomer or polymer. Such chemically bonded polymer scrap can be mixed with other polymers to form polymer blends. 2 Polymer blends of styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN) and ethylene-propylene-diene copolymer (EPDM) were prepared by casting from chloroform solution with the fraction of 80/20, respectively. SAN/EPDM blends were degradated at 140o C for several time intervals. The intensity of degradated SAN/EPDM blends was followed by IR-spectroscopy. After that samples were dissolved in toluene/MEK and polymerized with initiator dibenzoyl-peroxide (DBP) and styrene monomer (St). Polymers such as homopolymer (SAN), graft copolymer (EPDM-g-SAN) and gel were extracted after polymerization. Extractions of polymers were made in Soxlet in solvents: SAN in mixture of acetone/methanol, graft copolymer in tetrahydrofurane, while the remaining part is considered as gel. The intensity of degradation was proved by IR-spectroscopy. Results of extracted graft copolymer EPDM-g-SAN proved reaction between polymer radicals. The highest content of graft copolymer is obtained for SAN/EPDM polymer blend that was exposed to thermal degradation for the longest time period of 90 hours.
