Sažetak
On a practical level, using internet search engines can be viewed as justified, but only to a certain point, especially regarding some specific topics and some types of structured reviews. This strategy seems to have become a ubiquitous part of research methodology in structured literature reviews, not only as an additional search option, but also as a standalone method of literature review (Adams et al. 2016 ; Stansfield et al. 2016). On the other hand, one could argue that even established databases are not immune to introduction of search-related bias, mostly due to their internal dynamics (Bramer et al. 2016). This may contribute to irreproducibility of the search methodology. Logging off from personal accounts, using pseudo-anonymized or advanced search options are options that may reduce this bias. Unfortunately, there is no proven method of bypassing internet search engines’ personalized algorithms and risking the introduction of selection bias. Other previously highlighted approaches include using meta- search engines and other specific software that exhibits certain characteristics of their designers’ epistemological viewpoints (Bozdag and van den Hoven 2015). Comprehensive approaches for tackling these issues are not yet well established (Cooper et al. 2017). Existing recommendations do emphasize reproducibility and scientific rigor that should be reached through broader cultural shift towards accountability and trust that includes all stakeholders in the scientific process.
