Sažetak
For decades, collocations have been the subject of research in various linguistic disciplines, especially in English and German speaking countries. Collocations are more or less fixed word co- occurrences on a syntagmatic level whose components cannot be freely combined, but which are subject to certain semantic restraints. The possibility to replace collocational components is very small or non-existent due to the limited choice of potential words which can form a syntagmatic relationship with the other components of the collocation. Native speakers of a particular language possess intuitive knowledge of collocations, unlike a learner of a foreign language who has yet to master them. Research has shown that foreign language speakers use their first language to directly translate collocational components into the target language, which in case of divergent structures are not in line with the standard use of the foreign language. This makes natural and fluent communication in the foreign language difficult, especially in cases where such word combinations at the level of interlinguistic comparison are incongruent, meaning that they are different in the source and target language. The awareness of these incongruences is a part of collocational competence. This competence among foreign language learners is defined as the ability to recognize, understand, and use collocations. The aim of the presentation is to point out the need for re-defining the understanding of collocational competence and to emphasize the role of the contrastive approach in acquiring collocational competence in foreign language learning. Finally, the role of L1, not just as a (potential) source of negative transfer, but as a prerequisite for the acquisition of collocations, will be highlighted.
