Sažetak
Introduction / Objectives: To determine the levels of hopelessness, COVID-19 related anxiety, obsession, and fear in young adults, and assess possible effects of physical and mental health status. Methods (design / setting / participants / intervention / main outcome measures): We conducted a cross-sectional online survey from 27 July to 28 October 2020 on a sample of 293 young adults (75 % females, mean age = 25.2 ± 3.09). The survey questionnaire included information of the study and informed consent, general demographic data, and data on personal stressors related to COVID-19 (e.g., having to be in isolation, a close person having COVID-19, physical health status, and mental health status). We used the Coronavirus Anxiety Scale, Obsession with COVID-19 scale, Fear of COVID-19 scale to assess the level of COVID-19 related anxiety, fear, and obsession, while for hopelessness, we used Beck’s hopelessness scale. Results: On average, participants showed relatively low levels of hopelessness (total score of 43.02 (95% CI 42.2–43.9) out of maximum 100), as well COVID- 19 related anxiety (total score of 6.48 (95% CI 6.2-6.8) out of maximum 25), obsession (total score of 6.13 (95% CI 5.8–6.4) out of maximum 20), and fear (total score of 10.63 (95% CI 10.1– 11.1) out of maximum 35). Participants that reported physical health issues did not demonstrate statistically significantly higher levels of hopelessness or COVID-19 anxiety, obsession, and fear (P>0.05). On the other hand, those who reported a mental health issue showed statistically significantly higher levels of hopelessness (P=0.030), obsession (P=0.029), and fear (P=0.007), but not statistically significantly higher levels of COVID-19 anxiety (P=0.090). Conclusion: Participants demonstrated relatively low levels of hopelessness and COVID-19 related anxiety, obsession, and fear which could partly be attributed to liberal measures and fewer active cases during the summer months when the survey was conducted. Young adults with a diagnosed mental health issue reported higher levels of hopelessness, COVID-19 related anxiety, obsession, and fear, implying that those individuals could also be more prone to COVID-19 related mental health issues.
