Sažetak
The landscapes of the Mediterranean region are often considered as being in a "degraded" condition as a consequence of overexploitation. However, a considerable amount of research on the evolution of Mediterranean vegetation shows that the landscape history of this region is very difficult to determine and even with modern methods such as pollen analysis and carbon dating it is impossible to delineate the effect of climate, human pressure and hazardous erosion events in the BCE period. More and more research confirms that the development of the Mediterranean cultural landscapes had occured already several millenia BCE and that civilisations from antiquity probably did not live in an environment very different from what it is today.
