Sažetak
The main goal of this paper is to mark the first step in examining what Japanese studies researchers (especially religious scholars) must do in considering what people involved in the Japanese anti-religious movement did and did not achieve. It also describes the current situation in Japan surrounding religion and issues that can be regarded as religious in nature. The anti- religious movement in Japan was carried out mainly by Japanese communists and socialists in the early 1930s with the aim of eliminating religious influences from the society and spreading Marxism in Japan. The movement enthe ded following suppression by the government after only a short time. Nevertheless, the impact this movement had on intellectuals and religious individuals at the time should not be underestimated. It raised religious issues inquiring into the nature of Japanese religions, religious orders, the Imperial system, etc. These issues have yet to be resolved or even discussed sufficiently. Despite this, the discourse commonly includes view- points such as “the Japanese basically have a very generous view of religion”, etc. A brief overview of the history and features of the anti-religious movement in Japan will be presented in order to verify whether this is the “reality”of the Japanese religious situation.
