Sažetak
Jalžabet, Martijanec and Zbelava are considered to be well known sites of the Early Iron Agein Podravina (northwest Croatia). Although the sites helped us immensely to understandthe development of the Early Iron Age in north Croatia, many important aspects concerningthe sites, but also concerning the Early Iron Age landscape were still missing. This was theprimary thought behind the decision on participation of the Institute of Archaeology inZagreb in the “Monumentalized Early Iron Age Landscapes in the Danube River Basin” (“Iron-Age-Danube”) Interreg DTP project. 1 The idea was to use modern instruments likeLiDAR or geophysics together with the classic archaeological methods to research, protectand present the important archaeological landscape in Jalžabet.Regretfully, in September 2017, during the implementation of the Iron- Age-Danube project, the archeological team of the Institute of Archeology verified that Gomila in Jalžabet – oneof the most famous prehistoric monuments of the Republic of Croatia and one of the raregigantic unexplored prehistoric burial mounds in Central Europe – was looted and severelydamaged during the robbery.Due to the possible further damage to this valuable archaeological monument and thanksto the intervention funds of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia, the Institute ofArcheology started an immediate rescue excavation at the beginning of winter 2017, whichcontinued in 2018 and 2019.
