Sažetak
This paper investigates the movement-countermovement dynamics of feminist and anti-gender movements in Croatia and Portugal as part of the wider topic of radical right movement mobilization. Anti-gender movements have, although with varying success, been continuously gaining momentum throughout Europe with noticeable mobilization success in Eastern and Southeastern Europe. Research so far has encompassed case studies whilst comparative designs and movement-countermovement theories have yet to be applied to the phenomenon. By using a mixed-method research design I am comparing movement-countermovement interactions of feminist and anti-gender movements in Croatia and Portugal. I am using a protest event analysis dataset that is based on newspaper articles on protest events published in two daily newspapers in the period from 2000 to 2017. By analyzing the interactions between two opposing movements I will identify the effects one movement has on the other in terms of protest event frequency, protest durations and movement demobilization. The results will showcase which movement leads the way and which movement acts as a reaction against the other movements’ activities. Comparing countermovements with opposing mobilization successes, I will provide a deeper insight into the logic of the anti-gender movement activities as well as contribute to the scholarship on dynamics between opposing movements. Dynamics between the movements can act as one of the explaining factors in the success differences of Portugal’s and Croatia’s anti-gender movement.
