Sažetak
A short article on the subject of pygmy grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Tetrigidae) is given, focused on the knowledge gathered on the subject of conservation until now. As pygmy grasshoppers are not a well- known group of animals, just a fraction of the species has had their IUCN status assigned and their natural habitat evaluated. The group holds good potential for conservation biology research since these insects often live a semi-aquatic life, giving information about both terrestrial and water habitat quality in their surroundings. Counting almost 2000 species found around the world, with new species being described every year, research of this second largest family of grasshoppers has so far been mostly focused on resolving the taxonomy of the group. Many species are endemic, especially in the tropics, meaning much research is needed to discover how many of them are endangered in their natural habitat and in possible need of protection. The importance of social media is argued as well, pointing to its potential use for researchers.
