Sažetak
Despite the several thorough geo-political changes and the liminal position of former Yugoslavia, modern art and architecture displayed incredible vitality. The primary expectation set in front of architecture and urbanism was the moderation of modernising aspirations performed by the different ruling elites, whether pre-WWII bourgeoisie class or socialist project. While some pre-WWII leftist art groups were socially engaged in oppositional practices, modernism in socialist Yugoslavia was established as official and dominant cultural and architectural discourse which reached its peak in the fifties and sixties in some fine works comparable in quality to the international production. But, the equation of “moderate modernism” with socialism also imposed the impossibility to think outside of the “system without alternative” so the main line of modernism lacked in-depth critical reflections. Furthermore, continuous or abrupt transitional socio-political conditions have been tightly affiliated with production of built environment. Doctrine of unrealistic development in general left many modernisation processes unfinished or aborted, but in some cases enabled radical experiments. “Moderate modernism” and advanced or experimental positions in former Yugoslavia were mutually intertwined ; but several architectural practices deserve attention as authentic outbursts of radical architectural thinking. These works proposed either new visions of urban reality comprising utopian horizon and rational thinking or presented almost violent experiments in spatial configurations. Both poles were striving for construction of a new urban condition beyond the scope of a purely functional ideological framework. My lecture will outline the parallelism of the most advanced modernisation proposals and puzzling deviances from modernist norm with the aim to briefly illustrate cultural and societal contradictions of the former Yugoslavian context which, to some extent, remain unresolved to this day.
